welcome
Welcome to the Town of Morristown, NY, a community of 2,000 located on the majestic St. Lawrence River, at the beginning of the Thousand Islands. We are located in St. Lawrence County, one of New York state's largest counties and comprise three hamlets: Edwardsville, Brier Hill and Morristown. We are a friendly community with a warm and vibrant quality of life.
Our natural resources draw thousands of visitors each year for boating, fishing and hiking. For access to the St. Lawrence, many come to Jacques Cartier State Park which covers 451 acres and draws more than 22,000 visitors each year. At Jacques Cartier you'll find camping, picnic tables, playgrounds, hiking, fishing, a boat launch and docks, cross-country skiing and ice-fishing.
Black Lake is a natural, glacier lake formed by the same glacier that carved out the Great Lakes which melted from 11,000 to 15,000 years ago. Black Lake encompasses an area of almost 11,000 acres, stretching over 20 miles. About 4 miles across at its widest point, the lake is filled with sandbars, underwater shoals, and rugged rocky islands similar to those found in the northern-most reaches of Canada. The town of Edwardsville sits at the heart of the Lake.

Brier Hill has a rich history of farmers, small business and hard-working folks dedicated to community service and raising families. At one point in the late 1800's there was lodging, a cheese factory, grocers, boot maker, barrel maker, wheelwright and blacksmith, schools, churches, Grange Hall and more. Brier Hill was home to industrious people intent on a fruitful life.
People first came to the area in the early 1800's settling along the banks of the Black Lake and the St. Lawrence River. The Town of Morristown was officially established in 1821. Rich land along the scenic lake and access for trade and shipping on the majestic river proved a powerful lure to settlers during a time of The Great Immigration of 1870-1920.
The Village of Morristown is built on a terraced bay of the St. Lawrence River. Commerce was busy during its earliest of days with river steamers, shipping and railroad due to its close proximity with Brockville, Ontario Canada. The wharf had at one time many industries that would eventually close due to wars, the depression and recession. Much of this history is on display at The Gateway Museum.
Generations of families have lived in our town or return every summer to enjoy our cherished St. Lawrence River and beloved Black Lake for their many attributes.
Our active volunteer community helps create a rich diversity in life experiences for summer residents, year-round residents and guests. To explore the activities and festivals contact them here.
